No Way, AT&T

The Wall Street Journal just reported that FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is moving to join the Department of Justice in rejecting AT&T's proposed takeover of T-Mobile.

Genachowski will reportedly call for an "administrative hearing" in tandem with the DoJ's suit to block the merger. This signals that the prospects for approval of this merger are next to none.

"It's rare for the FCC to seek an administrative hearing on merger deals like this," reports the Journal. "The last time the agency did this was in 2002 on the proposed merger of EchoStar and DirecTV. The companies eventually pulled the deal."

The move is yet another nail in the coffin of this anti-competitive, job-killing merger, and it's a huge victory for the hundreds of thousands of activists who stood up against this deal.

It's now clear that no amount of AT&T lies could save this merger from defeat — not lies about job gains, nor lies about innovation and competition.

This time, we should applaud Chairman Genachowski for seeing through AT&T's deceit and standing up for the public interest, despite intense pressure from AT&T’s army of lobbyists.

AT&T has spent millions on campaign contributions, lawyers and misleading advertising campaigns to help push the merger through Washington. But the truth — that this merger would kill tens of thousands of jobs, raise prices for consumers and stifle competition — is winning out.

The public outcry has stopped one massive corporation — and its lobbyists — in its tracks. For now.

I can say without a doubt that Washington's conventional wisdom wouldn't have turned against this deal were it not for you and others — both online and off — raising hell about AT&T's plans.

Working together we can make a difference. This huge win is proof of that.
