We just scored two important victories.

First, 22,000 activists told Congress to reject the “Mobile Informational Call Act of 2011” — otherwise known as the robocall bill — and this week it died. The bill would have allowed marketers to make robocalls to your cellphone — showing a blatant disregard for our privacy and our rights as mobile phone users.

Second, two weeks after we pushed for an investigation, executives from Carrier IQ — the company whose spying software was secretly installed on more than 140 million cellphones — flew to Washington to explain themselves to the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission.

Both of these issues make one thing clear: Mobile phones are the new frontlines in the battle over our right to communicate. It’s a fight we will wage without stopping until our freedoms are fully protected.

The wireless carriers talk about our phones as if they make or own them. But we own these devices. It’s time we joined together against big corporations that invade our privacy, secretly track our data and interfere with our right to communicate.
