Our Freedom to Connect

It’s been three weeks since the National Security Agency’s spying scandal erupted — and millions are outraged.

Nearly everyone gets it: Individual freedom and social justice simply cannot survive in a surveillance state.

That’s why Free Press helped launch the StopWatching.Us coalition. We’re demanding that Congress investigate the NSA’s surveillance programs. And we’re pushing for legislative reforms that would restrict the government from conducting mass surveillance in secret and without oversight.

More than 500,000 people have taken action at StopWatching.Us, and thousands more are joining every day. Prominent signers include World Wide Web creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee, internationally renowned artist and dissident Ai Weiwei and Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. The constitutional right to communicate without the government watching us is a fundamental part of our democracy. Without it, a truly free press can’t function, activists can’t organize political movements — and people everywhere live in fear of Big Brother listening in on everything they do.

And companies like AT&T, Facebook, Google and Verizon are part of this mess. They’re working with the government to track our phone calls and spy on our emails, chats and other online activity. This is what happens when corporate monopolies and their pals in government conspire to eradicate the rights of everyday people.

In the wake of the Watergate scandal, Congress created the bipartisan Church Committee to get to the bottom of — and limit — the NSA’s domestic spying programs. We need a new far-reaching congressional investigation to uncover and make public the full extent of the NSA's spying programs. It’s the only way we can find out exactly what’s taking place and create true accountability.

For years, Free Press has been at the front lines of the fight to protect the open Internet and challenge corporate power. And we’ve won some remarkable victories.

But the NSA scandal is the most destructive example of corporate-government collusion we’ve ever seen. Leaks describing other spying programs are continuing to emerge. And the sound of opposition to this surveillance — online and in the streets — is growing louder and louder.

We’ll keep fighting. Join the movement here.
