Think Your Facebook Feed Is Private?

UPDATE: Great news! On April 27, the House of Representatives unanimously passed the Email Privacy Act. While the version that passed isn’t perfect, it’s still a big step forward. The legislation now moves to the Senate.

Here’s some bad news about your private photos, texts and emails.

The government can get its hands on nearly every aspect of your online life, from your private Facebook and Instagram pictures to text messages to direct messages on Twitter — basically anything that’s more than 180 days old. And the government can do this without a warrant.

Next week Congress will mark up the Email Privacy Act, a bill that could stop all of this. The Email Privacy Act is a much-needed update to a 30-year-old loophole-ridden law that controls government access to all private communications that are stored in the cloud.

This bill has more than 300 co-sponsors, more than any other bill pending in Congress — and if it went to a vote today it would pass in a landslide. But with the markup around the corner, it’s in danger of getting watered down — which would leave our communications vulnerable to government invasion.

In an era of sweeping government surveillance we need more bills like this one.
