  • Free Press Cheers FCC Order to Reduce Cost of Prison Phone Calls

    WASHINGTON -- On Friday, the Federal Communications Commission voted to reduce calling rates for prisoners and their families. The vote comes more than a decade after Martha Wright, joined by inmates and their families, petitioned the FCC to regulate the price of calls that today can cost more than $15 for a 15-minute call. Wright struggled to afford the cost of calls to her grandson while he was incarcerated.

Claire McCaskill highlighting the importance of the Lifeline program. The signers include AARP, the Center for Media Justice, Consumers Union, the Free Press Action Fund, SEIU Missouri State Council, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates.

    WASHINGTON -- On Monday, Federal Communications Commissioner Mignon Clyburn takes over as acting chairwoman of the agency. She's the first woman to lead the FCC, and she will remain chairwoman until the Senate confirms her successor. President Obama has nominated Tom Wheeler, a former industry lobbyist and a major donor to the Obama campaign, for the position.
